Lydia is a 37 year old mother of two that lives in the Iganga District of Uganda. She went into labor recently but was not able to reach the health center in time to save her child. By the time she arrived, her baby was already dead and she had developed a fistula.
Nakirya is happy that, for the first time in 21 years, she is feeling healthy due to the generous contributions of individuals like you and the Uganda Village Project (UVP).
In order to repair women with fistulae, UVP firsts identifies women though various modes of outreach. They then transport women to “repair camps” at Kamuli Mission Hospital, where they are repaired by surgeons from Uganda Childbirth Injuries Fund, a UK-based organization. They also transport one attendant for each patient, a requirement in Ugandan hospitals.
After surgery and recovery, UVP transports the women home and follow up at the women’s homes to check on the repair’s success, monitor for surgical complications, and assist the women with further steps if the repair was not successful.
When Lydia goes back home she hopes she will be able to return to work at the market, a job she had left so many years ago, and also attend community gatherings. She would like to thank Uganda Village Project, Darshan, Tracy, and Dale for the support given to her.
